Here are some Afrikaans terms that I thought I would share with you, along with their true meanings:
dronk vir driet – drink too much and get highly emotional
Jou ma – Either you’re looking for a fight, messing with a mate or you’re from Mitchell’s Plain. Either way, the chances of the full version of this being tolerated here are slim.
Dop – a drink, basically a shot or a beer.
Gatvol – literally means arse-full but is mainly used as someone who is Fed-up.
Spook en Diesel – Klipdrift/Wellinton brandy and coke. Like drinking sump oil dissolved in acetone, only not as posh. Rots the brain beyond hope of recovery. Favourite drink of Dutchmen and Jake White.
Moegu – A stupid person or someone who is a bit off the pace in the social scene.
Dagga-dop-en-pomp – The essentials for a good night out in SA.
Vaalie – One from the wrong (Northern) side of the River Vaal. Distinguished by being surgically attached to their BMW keyrings, Vaalies are the ones who’d rather live in an oxygen-free smog-drenched crime-fest than reduce their consumption of hair products and fake nails [prounounced. “naaaay-uhls”]. The annual migration of the Vaaldebeest herds at Christmas to the coast is one of the great sights of Africa.
Slapgat – literally means loose-arsed. I know it to mean being a lazy naai.
Lus – I’m keen
Jags – very horny
Spanner valley – Any town/suburb where spanners live. Mostly applied to towns in the Vaal Triangle (Vereeniging – Vanderbijlpark – Sasolburg)
