If you have not yet heard of it, trust me you will soon enough. 5’s Futbol is a relatively new brand which has broken into the Cape Town market extremely well! They have artificial fields, which could better be described as sick ass courts, which are not affected by the weather and therefore there is never any reason to cancel any game! It is run by Ajax under 15 coach/manager Ian Taylor and my mate Daniel Fernandes. Yes that cat that used to be the legend manager at The Bang Bang Club before it went into it’s downward spiral toward the end. They offer social football slots to any teams that would like to have a bit of a run around, it is R360 for an hour game, which works out to about R25 a player which is a steal! Trust me when I say this you will need at least 2 substitutes if you are not in reasonably good shape!
They also run a 10 week long corporate league which specifically for businesses and pretty much any brands which are keen to offer their employees the chance to bond outside of the office! Mr. Cape Town 5’s is the name of our team which consists of Jon Woolley, Mark Lipman, Calvin Ferreira, myself, Lukas Metzmacher, Glen Montgomery and our most loyal supporter and local DJ, Anthea 😉 Mark Habib was part of the setup, but he got injured showing off in the first game, so we have lost his talents up front. We lost our first two games but came away with a lekker 12-6 victory yesterday evening. About bladdy time if you ask me! I am really enjoying it and we have all come a long way since the first painful game, where you tend to sweat and cough out all the death from the weekend…Daniel Berman from Open Entertainment also has a side, which is sick and they have their own supporter, in the form of the lively Jess Kempen.
I will be there again tonight, along with the MyLife Homeless World Cup boys, as well as some of the guys from the centre who I will be playing for. Oh god, how could I forget that my man Darren Blasich is also employed by the brand and is a fine addition to team in my opinion. They are afiliated with Ajax Cape Town and run their soccer schools at all three venues. These include the Hellenic Greek Club in Moullie Point, Sandrift near Table View and The Italian Club in Milnerton! They are also running holiday clinics, so if you nare looking for a place to dump your lietjie for the day, this is definitely the right place. The clinics will be sponsored by Spur, so I am sure they will be fed well too 😉
I will be interviewing some of the MyLife Homeless World Cup players this evening and will post that up for you tomorrow, along with some pictures of the courts, so that you can get a better understanding of how sick this place is. Best of all the backdrop is none other than the Cape Town Stadium and the brand spanking new Metropolitan Golf Course! For holiday clinics or corporate league booking please email me on dylan@campsbay.net so that I can pass on your request to Daniel and the boys! Come down on Monday to support Mr. Cape Town 5’s and have a beer or 10, because there is a fully stocked bar at the place too 😉 Visit www.fivesfutbol.co.za for more information!
