Support United Against Malaria

You may remember my post about this last year, but if you don’t… today is World Malaria Day! For one thing, the highest incidence of malaria deaths in the world happens on our doorstep in sub-Saharan Africa where we’re still losing one child a minute to this completely preventable and curable disease. Cape-based non-profit, Relate, is inviting South Africans to help turn this tragedy around.

Malaria threatens half the world’s population and claims 655 000 lives each year. 90% of those are in Africa, where a child dies from malaria every minute. The disease also stunts productivity and economic growth, further contributing to the cycle of poverty. Relate not only sells these bracelet’s in aid of preventing and combating the disease itself, but also empowers workers (including township gogos and refugees) who produce the actual bracelet’s! I am still wearing mine from last year, which shows that it is also of very high quality…

It’s a great model whereby every single bracelet sold improves (and possibly even saves) the lives of a number of people. Money raised for United Against Malaria is used to fund mosquito nets, vaccines and treatment. It saves lives! NB not all causal bracelets on the market are made by non-profit organisations. If you want to be sure your money is going to the cause of your choice while also supporting those in need, look out for Relate’s “R” bead which is the mark of authenticity on all our bracelets.

Get Your Hands On A UAM Bracelet:

Relate UAM bracelet for R30 from Game, Tiger’s Eye curio shops (like Indaba and Out of Africa) and online through Digital Mall – please remember that Relate is 100% not for profit. Buying these bracelets is wholly to the benefit of those at risk of contracting malaria and those involved in making the bracelets.

Follow Relate on Twitter @RelateBracelets and find them on Facebook [here] to stand behind and keep up with the United Against Malaria initiative. The hash tag they will be using is #RollBackMalaria so get involved in the conversation and use the tag if you are Tweeting!
