Pick n Pay VS Cinema Nouveau [protest video]

“The way that art and cinema have to suffer at the hands of corporate greed.” “We as the people would prefer a cinema, rather than a Pick n Pay!” “It’s a big loss to Cape Town society, it’s not something you can find on every corner…” “The public were not even consulted, so it’s disrespect to us art loving South Africans!” and… “They have lost a shopper in me!”

These were just some of the quotes coming out of the protesters that are not happy about the Cinema Nouveau in Cavendish shutting it’s doors. Check out their protest video below, pretty cool I think. If you are on twitter and agree that art like this that has been around for 30 years should stay tweet using the #DontKillVideo hash tag!

I’m a massive film lover & a Nouveau fan so I completely get what they’re saying but they should also understand that many theatre’s have been shut over the last century and nobody protested with a plastic bag over their head. Hipster fashion has never involved death by suffocation.

Film is merely being reinvented. Film is changing, the demographic of audiences is changing. Instead of wasting time trying to make a silly statement that nobody will remember by next week, they should be trying to find a solution.

I’m so bummed its shutting down, but shouldn’t the public be targeting their frustrations on Ster Kinekor, it’s hard to justify R60 a ticket for non main stream movies, maybe if they made the experience of seeing great nouveau films more affordable it would have been worthwhile to hold onto the space! At least there is still The Labia Theatre 🙂

I went there often, and there were never more than a few people in the theatre. Let this be a lesson that the things you love won’t hang around if you don’t support them!

This is the single most ridiculous protest of the year. Do they know that Ster Kinekor made the decision to close the cinema or do they thing that Pick ‘n Pay forcefully threw a grenade and told everyone to get out?

The fact that the cinema has a whole 10 people in any given screening is enough to prove that it’s not a viable business plan any longer – so uhm, why are they protesting?

Anyway, if it was as big a thing as these lame protesters make it out to be, then there are plenty of locations for Ster Kinekor to open another cinema like this one to cater for the artsy.

Really. Where do these people find the time for this?
