Customer Retention – South Africa is playing catch up!

One small thing caught my eye, his Subway Subcard! Most of you will wonder why that caught my eye? It is simply because I always rant about how useless places in South Africa are with regard to their retention programmes.

My bra Calvin just returned to Cape Town after spending 2 long years grafting in the UK. He came back with a wardrobe full of sick new gear, mad electronic shit, headphones with a cord made from string and the one small thing that caught my eye, his Subway Subcard! Most of you will wonder why that caught my eye? It is simply because I always rant about how useless places in South Africa are with regard to their retention programmes.

The visually captivating UK Subcard...

Subway has taken it to another level in the UK. Here in South Africa we still rely on not loosing a piece of card board with 6 Subway stickers on it. Over there however, their Subcard is made from a thick plastic material with an awesome visual representation of the brand on the front. It has the Subway logo with the “eat fresh” pay off line accompanying it. Obviously they also included a clear product window with a picture of a scrumptious sub to fuel peoples hunger 😉 The really sick part though, is the back of the card. It basically allows you to get free subs when you have collevted enough points.

The back of the card with the Blackberry Barcode in the bottom corner.

But, here is the cool part… It has a Blackberry barcode on the back and a unique code. This is to ensure that if you loose your card, you will not loose the points you had earned up until that point! One is required to register online at www.subway.co.uk, then you can swipe your card, check your balance and redeem goods to the value of your purchase points! Goodluck South Africa, we have a long way to go until our local brands provide this sort of innovative retention programme…

Sik! the only thing i can think of that we have here is the Kaui card – and mine’s about 3years old and falling apart..(jst need 1 more tho;))

very clever and also really like the design, but if every place did this how would we fit all these cards in our wallets??
