Breaking News: Shark Attack At Fish Hoek

A man has been attacked by a shark at Fish Hoek beach. Witnesses say there is no evidence with regard to the type of shrk, although the man was said to be swimming quite far out to sea! He is in critical condition and the NSRI are currently attending to him. They have asked civilians to please steer clear of the scene so that he can recieve the proper medical attention he needs!

People have been asked to stay out of the water in the False Bay area, as the shark may still be in the area and any blood lost may still attract other creatures to the area! I hope he is going to make it, my prayers are with him and his family! If you are near the area or happened to witness the event, please let us know any updates on the situation!

Shark Attack Latest Update

Fish Hoek beach was said to have been closed by the City of Cape Town earlier this morning and the beach was closed during the time of the attack due to the sighting of the now confirmed Great White! Apparently the attack happened in Clovelly Corner, which is some way away from the main beach. The victim has has his right leg amputated below the knee, while his left also had to be partially amputated due to severe injuries! The helicopter is on route to air lift the man to hospital. Please pray for him!

Eye Witnesses Story, From Yvette:

We were at the beach during the late morning and the siren sounded, and the white flag was raised – “Leave the water immediately”. The white flag remained raised even during the power failure. My children and others who were playing on the beach spotted the shark near the rocks and watched it from Jager’s Walk for a few minutes until it diappeared into the depths. The man was attacked just before 1pm There has been a lot of shark activity in the Fish Hoek beach bay and the flags have been alternating between red and white for some days now, with the siren being sounded at least 3 times this week.

increased shark attacks can be due to a numer of factors Ecologically speaking…
All time favourite excuse it the mistaken identity, where a shark “mistakes” a bather for a seal.
Second option is recognition of humans as part of the natural aquatic environment. This means that the sharks frequent beaches with bathers often enough to think that they are part of the normal ecology, and therefore should be considered as prey.
Then finally, food shortage. if the shark cant get enough of its natural prey, bathers make for an easy alternative. Fat and slow moving.

Considering that the Bather was bitten more than once, it probably rules out the mistaken identity, so we are left with the other two options…

    Just my thoughts though.

Awesome, thanks for that Rob! Yeah he was bitten more than once, which means the shark was probably hungry. Although I think the whole chum story plays a part in drawing more sharks to the area, I do agree that the water is not our natural habitat. That is where sharks Live and we are invading their space every time we enter the ocean!

Classic … I also could not help pick up those accents even though it seemed so inappropriate given the severity of the trauma and event. Strange how in the midst of trauma and crisis and such there are certain things that have the capacity to draw your attention ….

Yip. I remember there was that Southern Right whale that landed on people’s yacht and wrecked the thing a while back. The funny thing was the people filming it from a boat nearby were laughing and just sailed past! At least the victim is stable now, and, he apparently said he has ignored the flags and warnings many times before and only has himself to blame. Pretty hectic.
