If you don’t know what it is, IRONMAN South Africa is one of the most gruelling races out there. IRONMAN South Africa triathlon is also the only IRONMAN on the African continent! It consists of a 3.8km swim, 180.2km bike ride and ends with a 42.2km run… I have just seen on the @IMSouthAfrica Twitter feed that 2 people passed away in this mornings swimming leg of their half IRONMAN event!
The half IRONMAN is being held in East London this year and is one of the biggest events of the calendar year for fitness freaks from all around SA! Condolences go out to the families of the 2 swimmers who fell victim to heart problems during the demanding swim… I have included the statement from IRONMAN SA below:
ANNOUNCEMENT: Our prayers to the families of 2 of our athletes who passed away this morning during the event. A statement will be released. The athletes in question suffered cardiac respiratory arrest during the swim. More info will be released, thank you for your understanding!
