An event I am running in conjunction with Fives Futbol targeted at the local Bloggers and online junkies, called the Cape Town Bloggers Cup, has brought up a very interesting topic… What is the actual official abbreviation of our wonderful City? Some say CPT, while other’s with just as much local street cred say CT? Obviously before designing the logo for the event I would like to know what the majority of Capetonians think, and, more importantly which one they regard as our OFFICIAL abbreviation?
Please comment on the article below with your thoughts, as YOUR decisions will influence the logo for the Cape Town Blogger’ s Cup! We also need to decide on an official # tag for the Twitter banter and promotion. It will either be #CptBloggersCupΒ ORΒ #CtBloggersCup – It is up to you please help me decide!
I think either is fine – BUT… CPT is actually the official international airport code for Cape Town International Airport, while CT is pretty obvious C (Cape) T (Town)… Personally I prefer CPT because its internationally known and recognised by anyone who’s ever flown into or out of Cape Town. But if you’re not the traveling sort? Would ‘CT’ then make more sense to you? Hmmm… Another reason to vote for CPT is that the official abbreviation for the American city of Conneticut is ‘CT’ and I’ve already found this confusing in twitter hashtags!
You have been a star. If Connecticut already has the CT abbreviation, then why fight it? I think Cpt makes more sense then? This actually brings me to another topic. RSA vs SA vs ZA? LOL
ZA π Even though this is a legacy from the Dutch colonisation of South Africa, it is pretty unique to our country. Try a hashtag with #SA(anything)… see what you come up with… crazy!
SA is the abbreviation for San Antonio, the 7th largest city in the USA.
It is also the abbreviation for South Australia, one of the 6 provinces/states of Australia.
Also the Abbreviation for Saudi Arabia.
And the list goes on π hehe…
Cpt that’s what comes up world wide in search engines , example if u wanting to fly from jhb to cape town the search code for cape town is Cpt international airport
Yeah, but then you see all the City Council stuff and departments with the CT abbreviation. I just want to see what the majority of Capetonians think, coz they are who count π still people are giving half of one and a dozen of the other. Quite even in the replies but I think CT is winning so far!
HAHA I think you mean 6 of one and half a doezen of the other
HAHAHA fuck I forgot to change that! Shot Johnny
Hey Mr. Cape Town. Awesome blog!! The official Airport abbreviation is CPT and is the only one that cannot be confused. I’d go with that one π
Shot Theo, looks like that is gonna be the one hey!
CPT is the airport abbreviation, and widely recognised. However, the traditional abbreviation is CTN (Ctn) or just CT. In the internet age these have almost disappeared. But their use dates back well over a century. Just as Johannesburg is traditionally abbreviated to JHB (or Jhb) and not JNB (airport code) so too is Cape Town contracted to Ctn. I prefer using Ctn unless I’m referring specifically to Cape Town’s airport.
