10 Reasons Why I Use UBER Taxis

Having been abducted before in one of those taxi’s that hang around outside Trinity, I now take getting a ride home pretty seriously. I used to use Excite, Intercab or Sport and to be 100% honest they are all decent, but I have been converted by this new UBER explosion onto the SA taxi scene. We caught one over the weekend to Banana Jam for a BrewDog tasting, and it came to R233, whilst InterCab quoted mates R260.

I am not going to blabber on about how amazing it is and the fact that celebs Tweet about their awesome service 24/7 all over the World too much. But one thing I dig is that they don’t pay for marketing/branding/blogs or social media mentions. So before I get to my ten reasons why I dig UBER, you can check out their website [here] for more of a lowdown if you want. Or read my reasons and then go check them out 🙂

10 Reasons I Use UBER Cape Town:

1. It’s all based on an app, so you never have to waste you precious airtime on holding to see if a damn Rikki driver is available! You obviously use data, but that’s irie because I live on social media sites for work anyway…

2. You never have to carry cash or tip the driver. You actually aren’t allowed to tip them as it’s all included in the fare. No more worrying about change or sweating that the meter isn’t gonna fuck you over!

3. You ride in style. They only use Mercedes, BMW or Audi vehicles in SA at the moment. Not a bad way to impress a squeeza or client too I might add. Rocking up to fetch them in a sick C Class with a suited up driver!

4. They have a set rate of R11 per km, which isn’t the lowest in Cape Town, but it is pretty close and you know exactly how much your trip will cost. None of these scums that have a meter that carries on running while you;re at a stop street or in traffic. That boils my blood!

5. You can see exactly how long the driver is going to take from the second you request a pick up! None of this “he will be there soon he is just waiting for a chick in Clifton who is still changing” – like you get with Rikki’s shared rides…

6. You can literally watch the driver on the Google style map, so whilst he is taking the turn into your road, you know when to go out! This impresses everyone when I show them for the first time.

7. They have a promotional programme which allows you to make money, the more people you sign up and spread the word to. For instance, use my promo code UberMrCPT and you get R90 credit for your first ride. Not to mention I get R90 into my account too 😉 Pay it forward and use my code homies!

8. In NYC you can Uber a helicopter if you wish. That’s just fucking awesome on a whole new level, so it’s going in as one of my top 10!

9. Their Twitter and Social Media presence, plus response and the way they deal with their fans is top class. Someone is always on the ball and looking to help you out if you have a problem. Follow them on @Uber_CT and send them some #UberLOVE if you dig the service. Who knows they may even throw some credit your way if they are feeling the LOVE!

10. Lindsay and Patrick whom I met prior to their Cape Town launch are just FUCKING AWESOME, and, have been extremely good to all the influencers from the get go. I have shared many  night out on the jol with them (Pat drinks tequila and Lindsay drinks wine) if you ever see them out 😉 Not to mention their launch party I attended with Dean Fuel, Jeannie D, Sam from HYPE Media, Tom from Don’t Party and a whole host of local legends!

Myself and Lindsay from UBER Cape Town at the launch party. A great night with awesome people and quality chow!

Download the app for your smartphone, simply just search UBER in app store. Make sure you use my promo code UberMrCPT to get your R90 credit too 😉 Let me know what you think when you use the service or if you have tried it before. You can Tweet me on @MrCPT if you have any issues and I can hook you up some tips or help, or pass you onto Lindsay. She’s a star!

Giving my credit card details to a company that I know nothing of and do not have any trust in yet is a bit over the top.

    • Mr. Cape Town October 22, 2013 at 2:51 pm #

I went to the launch bru, they are a company that runs all over the World and privacy is assured! The company that handles their banking is owned by PayPal. Check out their website buddy!

  2. Cas October 22, 2013 at 3:13 pm #

Morne’s response is the exact reason why South African companies struggle so much with any online businesses… South Africans are too worried about online payments and haven’t grasped that ‘internet culture’ at all!!

    • Mr. Cape Town October 22, 2013 at 4:19 pm #

Hey Cas! Yeah I feel you. Hoping they get the debit card issue sorted soonest, therefore people can actually just EFT! It’s also because people don’t realise how big they actually are Worldwide. I didn;t know much until I did some research 🙂 Thanks for the comment!

Hi there, thanks for your article. This looks great! I would like to use it to pick up a friend from CT airport. Do you think the user who requests the pickup can be different form the rider? I.e. can I request a car to pick him up from the airport from my phone when I won’t be there? Thanks!

    • Mr. Cape Town December 13, 2013 at 4:00 pm #

Yeah! You can give Lindsay a call on 071 211 0903! Tell her Dylan sent you onto them 🙂

Hi. I have a quick question. My boss is a member of Uber, and the other day he asked me to get him a taxi, how do i do this seeing as there are no contact numbers?

    • Mr. Cape Town May 8, 2014 at 11:33 am #

  8. Jenna November 11, 2014 at 9:47 am #

What an awful experience with Garin – an Uber driver on Thursday, the 4th December 2014 driving from Sea Point to Kloof Street. He arrived late and then started the journey by driving in the opposite direction to my requested destination. He took the slower available route. He attempted to drive down a one-way up street and only didn’t because I pointed this out to him. He responded that he was distracted by his phone!!! He drove past my destination – shocking as I had given him an exact address. I would like to be refunded in full for this trip.
What a horrific Uber experience and I am unable to locate contact details for a supervisor on the Uber Cape Town website.

  10. Simone January 28, 2015 at 3:53 pm #

Does a debit card also work? Or does it have to be a credit card?

    • Mr. Cape Town January 30, 2015 at 1:20 pm #

Hey Simone, some do! Use my promo code UberMrCPT for R90 free credit off your first ride. And take Uber X it’s only R7 per km which is a steal!

  11. Guru santillan April 7, 2015 at 9:14 pm #

Hey love the idea of uber but I don’t have a credit card i have a debit card have they sorted out the use of debit cards or does it have to be credit card

    • Mr. Cape Town April 10, 2015 at 5:11 pm #

You can now use a debit card! Use my promo code for your free ride > UberMrCPT

  12. Chi June 26, 2015 at 8:52 am #

How do you pay with debit card?

    • Mr. Cape Town July 22, 2015 at 1:59 pm #

Hey, there are ways which you can use certain debit cards, or they have another service which you can add credit to and use that! Check their website http://www.uber.com for details!

  13. Jaime July 6, 2015 at 9:05 pm #

Hi I need to take the red eye to jhb from cpt in the am. Do I just request via my app same as per any other day or js there a way to book it I advance?

  14. Nick July 15, 2015 at 10:54 am #

Not happy with Uber – my 14 year old daughter set up account using my card – a UK card actually so I got no notification until i looked at the account some months later as I rarely use the account. So Uber let people use cards that arent theirs

    • Mr. Cape Town July 22, 2015 at 1:57 pm #

Well how is that their fault, it’s a credit card with no pin code. Basically the same as your daughter stealing your card to go shopping with. Set up your notifications better, what if she was shopping on the card, you wouldn’t get notified either… Just saying, your daughter is the one in the wrong here, not Uber man.

  15. John July 28, 2015 at 5:50 am #

Hi, it shocks me when people complain about Uber,
first if the driver is running, you can still cancel the trip! Maybe the traffic is bad.
Second, why you mad at uber if you did get notify ? Your daughter did notify you either …

I’ve been using uber since 2013, and they are just excellent , the support, the quality, the speed and everything ! If they take slow route, blame the gps not the driver or uber , maybe that slowest route is the safest.. Who knows …

    Great article MrCpt
