World Cup Cricket Fail – Thanks SABC

Local cricket fans were fuming yesterday as they got shown a repeat of the South Africa vs India game, instead of the scheduled Pakistan vs West Indies encounter! Today is no different as yet another repeat is being shown, instead of the battle between India and Australia!!!

I, for one, have not been affected by the fact that SABC only aired 32 of the 49 games during February. However, the fact that the 2 biggest games of the WC so far are not aired on local television i a disgrace in my eyes. The Proteas have some of the most loyal fans on earth and issues like contractual obligations should not take away the chance of them following the other big sides in the WC!!! Supersport had the initial rights and has only given SABC the chance to view 66% of the WC games.

SABC viewers missed out on a great Pakistan bowling performance! Pity

I can watch them on Supersport, for those of you that can’t Australia are 209-5 after 44 overs. But I really disagree that many of the local consumers who cannot afford DSTV, simply have to miss out on the chance to watch Pakistan vs West Indies/India vs Australia on their home television. People in SA pay their TV licences for a reason and you can bet your bottom dollar that the cricket World Cup is one of those occasions!

“Due to contractual obligations, the SABC cannot show today (Wednesday) and tomorrow’s (Thursday’s) quarter-final matches. However, it will show Friday and Saturday’s quarter-final matches.” SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago said the rights to broadcast the World Cup were held by SuperSport, with whom the SABC had negotiated to show 66 percent of the games.

Ponting reached another century today as Australia are busy with a tough encounter with hosts India!

“In February, we said we would only show 32 of the full 49 games. We only found out this week which games we would be allowed to show, which included the Proteas game on Friday and the quarter-final between Sri Lanka and England on Saturday.”

All I can say is that fans should never be deprived of the chance to watch their local heroes in action on the biggest stage on the planet! I am glad that the SA game will be aired tomorrow, because if it wasn’t, there would without a doubt be an uproar from the Protea fans! What are your views about this whole saga?

Boom Boom Afridi was instramental yesterday with his 4 wicket haul!

If they knew how many games they were going to show, why not fight to show the biggest and most important 32 of the 49. If you count 6 group games, 4 quarter finals, 2 semi finals and 1 final it ads up to 13. That leaves you 19 more games to show the other big guns.

Couldn’t agree more Corne!!!Rather then show the latter stages of the competition, where people actually watch good teams. Not Holland and Canada’s games!
