Weekend Sports Wrap

Just a quick wrap of some of the top sports result and stories from this past weekend. It includes a Manchester derby semi at Wembley, De Villiers injury scare, some local Nedbank Cup action and even a bit about the rugga's...

Cricket WC – Pietersen slews India on home turf

Robo hits the winning boundry against a tough India side!

South Africa’s fate was left in the hands of spin bowler Robin Pietersen this weekend, as the lower order batsman smashed a 6 and two 4’s in the last over to bring it home for the Proteas. Kallis scored 69, while De Villiers reached a quick fire 52, before loosing his wicket by being caught at deep mid wicket! SA have Ireland and Bangladesh left in their wake, as they look to win their first ever WC trophy. I must say the camp looks strong, and, my money is on the boys in Green & Gold to bring it home. For some reason I just think this is our year!

FA Cup – United dump out The Gunners to set up a mouth watering semi final against Citeh

Fabio opens the scoring against Arsenal at OT. The youngster put in a great performance from the unfamiliar position of left midfield.

Manchester United proved they were not going to loose 3 on the trot by overcoming Arsenal at Old Trafford on Saturday. I was at Caprice for the game with some mates and the atmosphere with the cricket beforehand was second to none. The team I am supporting always seems to win when I watch at my local watering hole? Weird but true. United have set up an absolute humdinger of a semi, as they meet their crass town rivals Man Citeh at Wembley. I wish we met one of the other two though because a Manchester Derby FA Cup final at Wembley would have been something special!

Fixtures:

Manchester United vs Manchester City

Bolton vs Stoke City

Nedbank Cup – Kaizer Chiefs stumble in last 16

Lions can be proud of a gutsy performance against high flying Kaizer Chiefs. A late penalty in extra time was needed to clinch the result!

Chiefs once again looked very unconvincing in the last 32 clash against National First Division side Nathi Lions. Lions can be proud of a very gutsy performance and can definitely take some positives from the game. I really do not think Chiefs have what it takes to win the league this year! Whilst Pirates meet Ajax at Newlands on Wednesday, which is set to be one of the league deciders. If Pirates come out on top they have all but won the league, with Ajax’s tough round of fixtures which make up their run in…I will be at Newlands with the Ajax faithful and hopefully we can pull off a win which will stand us in good stead come the run in to the season 😉

Super Rugby – Stormers win again with no tries

Schalk Burger is a big doubt for the Bulls game coming up this weekend!

On Friday we went to Newlands to watch the Stormers in action. I must say thanks to my mate Scott from Sporting Bet for the tickets and it was a really a top, top evening. With Craig Stack from MyCityByNight on form as usual, how could we have not had a jol? I am not a huge rugby fan, but used to play the game and know how important it is for The Stromers to get the ball rolling this season. They are yet to score a try in 3 games and I must be honest, they are not playing the most attractive rugby at all. But you know what they say, a win is a win and the tries will come with time…Stormers Jou Lekker Ding!

Cape Argus – Tyler Day trumps big dogs

Tyler Day the winner of the Argus Cyle Tour - The world's largest cycle race!

The weather was pretty much perfect for the biggest cycling event Cape Town has to offer. I am sure you all remember the ghastly winds which all but ruined the event a couple of years back. This time it was mist, sun, and, a young beast in the form of Tyler Day who took home the title. Last years winner and top athlete Malcolm Lange was Day’s teamate for Bonitas and looked more happy than Tyler about the result. It was great to see so many young riders out there giving it their all, but my shout out has to go to my mates dad, Mr Shandel. The beast finished in a great time of just 2.57 min at the tender age of just 50. Big Up!

ICC WC – De Villiers has scan on injured left thigh

The entie country is awaiting news on AB's thigh injury. We hope it is not the end of his tournament!

South Africa have sent AB De Villiers for a scan on his left thigh this morning as they look to get to the bottom of his injury. This is not great news for us, although we have two reasonably easy fixtures left in our group stage. Ireland and Bangladesh make up the rest of the group games, with West Indies, India, Holland and England all already done and dusted. De Villiers is ranked 3rd in the batting scores with 2 centuries and a 50 in his first 4 outings. With @Hershybru not there we needed someone to come to the party!
