Manchester United outplayed Celtic in their first tour game in the USA with goals from man of the match Dimitar Berbatov, youngsters Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley. Berbatov showed glimpses of his form while at Tottenham Hotspur, which are undoubtedly his best years to date in the English game.
This time around it was another youngster who found the net after just 14 minutes to seal the result for the second generation of Fergie’s Fledglings, against an impressive Philadelphia Union side. Ferguson was full of praise for Obertan, as the young French forwards strike proved to be the decider.
“Goals always help players, of course, and when they are forwards in particular,” the boss told reporters at the post-match press conference. “There is a goal in Gabby, there is no question of that. The best aspect of his strike was his run, the timing of it and the timing and weight of the pass from Danny Welbeck. It was a good move and Gabby took it really well.”
Tom Cleverley was happy to play alongside veteran Paul Scholes and has said that only good can come from plying his traid next to one of the Premier Leagues most composed midfielder in history. “Playing for United and alongside someone like Scholesy is what every young lad dreams of,” Tom told ManUtd.com. “He’s a great mentor for me – I look to him every day in training and he’s definitely someone I can learn a lot from.”
Cleverley has been given a 3 year senior contract to try and break through into the first team after a string of impressive displays in the reserves last season.
There is a good mix of youth and experience this year as it seems Fergie is building another team for the future in order to leave the squad in a good situation before he one day decides to retire. I really like the look of this new squad and it will only get better when the likes of Rooney, Evra, Carrick, Ferdinand, Park and new boy Javier Hernandez who impressed at the World Cup Finals in South Africa for Mexico.
Their next tour game is against Kansas City Wizards on 25 July 2010.
