Cape Town Plans To Kick AFCON 2013

The South African Football Association (SAFA) met with potential host Cities for the African Cup Of Nations taking place in South Africa next year. The 2013 AFCON tournament sees all the best teams on the African continent battle it out for what could be described as the African version of the European Cup!

It is said that hosting a number of games at our very own Cape Town Stadium will cost R21 million, and, the City of Cape Town immediately raised their concerns about this large price tag! It is our (tax payers) money that will fund this project and if you ask me that is a pretty deep amount to fork out to host a mere few games. Although, being a football fanatic I would love to see the likes of Yaya Toure, Didier Drogba, Michael Essien and Steven Pienaar grace the field before my eyes! In saying that African football is hardly as popular as an event like the World Cup and we may struggle to fill the stadium if we are dealt games involving the smaller Nations…

What are your thoughts about us hosting a number of AFCON 2013 games Cape Town? I must say, I will be pretty gutted if we decide not to host the tournament… The CEO of Cape Town Stadium Grant Pascoe, shares my feelings and really hopes to host a number of games in our picturesque City. After all, what was the point of building one of the best stadiums in Africa if we aren’t going to use it for events like the AFCON 2013?

we have to host games, the stadium has been a cost on the city since the world cup and if it isnt used in times of oppotunity then its a total waste to the tax payer.

i agree its a pretty large amount that we shall be paying out of our pockets, but wouldnt it be worse to watch the stadium decay to nothing?

Agree 100% brother! This is a must in my eyes… We paid for the stadium already and with proper planning and a decent marketing campaign we can generate a shit load more than R21 000 000 for the Cape Town economy! Not to mention the awareness we and Africa get from hosting the tournament. Then there is also the return guests that will come from African countries who generally don’t holiday in South Africa!

How can you leave the most picturesque City in SA out of the event which is going to showcase our “best”?
