Finally… Most of my readers are probably rookers themselves, so I am expecting this one may get some deep comments. But, after I kicked the habit over five years back, I am EXTREMELY stoked upon hearing this news! For those of you that do not know; today (31 May 2011) is World No Tobacco Day. The Metro Police will no longer just focus on establishments that do not comply with the new laws which affect pubs, bars, nightclubs and restaurants, but now patrons could be picking up R500 spot fines for breaching the new laws themselves! “The WHO FCTC (World Health Organisation – Framework Convention on Tobacco Control) is a treaty signed by more than 170 United Nations members, including South Africa, which mandates preventative and punitive measures around tobacco usage. Built around the ethos that all people deserve to enjoy the highest possible standards of health, the treaty imposes binding actions on its members.”
The City of Cape Town has run various awareness programmes, although the laws have only seemed to hit home in the more affluent, upper end locations and venues! A handful of mainstream nightlife venues & restaurants are still not complying with these new regulations, and, now the police will be picking out individuals, not only venue owners for immediate spot fines. Out of the 3000 locations that were subject to investigation between July 2010 – Dec 2010, it is said that 97% of venues were compliant. Speaking ahead of World No Tobacco Day today, city health head Ivan Bromfield said: “There was a follow-up by city officials who started to fine the owners of restaurants and places of entertainment for non-compliance with tobacco control legislation.” – IOL R2500 is the biggest fine issued to an establishment for non-compliance with new regulations to date.
“Amendments to the Tobacco Control Act, which came into effect in September 2009, banned smoking in entertainment areas, including bars, clubs, on restaurant patios and walkways, on balconies and in parkades. The amendments also banned smoking in cars in which children younger than 12 are passengers, and put a stop to the sale of products such as sweets and chocolates by cigarette vendors.” – IOL
What does this mean for the Cape Town nightlife, and, more importantly YOUR venue?
What does this mean for the Cape Town nightlife, and, more importantly YOUR venue? I know some places are very strict with regard to these new laws and I can personally say as a non-smoker, places like @CafeCaprice are all the better for it. I no longer have to inhale clouds of smoke that arrogant wankers people blow right into my gesig! Good riddance rookers, enjoy those smokes outside in the cold. P.S I know a drink is not the same without your beloved entjie in your other hand to fuel that addiction, which we all know gets more intense under the influence 😉 HAHA

Well I suppose you can carry on if Piggs aren’t at your store often, but you may get a few complaints from anal consumers…But, I soppose if you work in a top establishment you may have to start taking those little walks outside 😉 I can suggest investing in a nice new jacket coz it’s getting damn cold!
