21 The New Legal Drinking Age For SA?

This is also quite a big blow to alcohol companies and brands who will loose out on 3 years worth of clientele! 18-21 was my prime in the drinking game and I am pretty sure that this bill has no chance of being passed. Well I sure as hell hope not ;)

As the Second Biennial Substance Abuse Summit approaches, which will run from March 15-17 in Durban, the big hype is around the legal drinking age in South Africa. Raising the legal drinking age to 21 in SA was just one of the proposals put forward to the social development minister, Bathabile Dlamini. Dlamini has stated that there is a clear link between alcohol abuse and domestic violence, gangsterism, drug abuse, rape and even murder! I must say, she is not far off with that statement.

That;s funny, only 3 of these people are legal to drink. Luckily there is no legal age for beego's 😉

Think about all the innocent lives that have been lost on our roads, because of immature, inexperienced drivers that are under the influence? According to News 24 “Alcohol ranked third in the country’s burden of disease and disability after unsafe sex and interpersonal violence.” They also stated that “Alcohol was also a factor in 29% of driver injuries and more than 47% of driver deaths.” Those stats alone show just how relevant the concern is amongst the South African government!

Cops will leave a few brasse in chains after a quick run through Long Street!

In saying this, the ANC wants to take away our youth’s rights to get gesuip, yet they still want these same kids to vote for them? Fat chance…But that’s just my opinion and I know if I was in that age bracket, there is no way in Hell I would be voting for the party that is trying to de-hydrate me 😉 This is also quite a big blow to alcohol companies and brands who will loose out on 3 years worth of clientele! 18-21 was my prime in the drinking game and I am pretty sure that this bill has no chance of being passed. Well I sure as hell hope not 😉 It also means less drunk, young birds will be on the prowl at The Assembly in the near future…Sigh!

If you are between 18-21 go grab a bottle from the Excelsior Wines Range at your nearest Tops, Ultra or Midmar in order to beat the rush 😉 Youngsters are going to be stocking up soon enough 😉

Hell fucking no….. This law will NOT be passed. Not only will alcahol brands loose out on business but all the clubs aimed at 18 year olds and the younger market will loose so much business! And ill organize a public youth revolt… We will all protest by getting completly shitfaced outside parliament!!!

Hmmmm I don’t mind so much!!!

    I am 21!

But this would cause a lot more under-age drinking! Not really the way to solve a problem

  3. martin March 15, 2011 at 11:44 am #

HAHA Ya nice spelling. I reckon kids these days should finish school before they get so Hyped up about alcohol laws

This is a stupid idea. 18 year olds can vote, go to jail and are considered adutls, but now they aren’t allowed to have a drink??
South africa has more important issues than the damn drinking age. Yes, kids start drinking at like 12, but would this be such a problem if people actually check IDs?
For real, you think clubs and alcohol stores are going to deny 18 year olds booze? Hello, its were they make A LOT of their money.
This will just increase underage drinking. Oh, and let’s not forget about how happy the police are going to be. More bribes?
Sorry, but before you go around changing drinking laws, fix the damn police.
America’s drinking age is 21, and so far, it doesn’t seem to be doing so well. How well do you think SOUTH AFRICA will do????

thanks so much that was some great insight. I am with you all the way. Stuff the piggs, they are useless and once again proved it this weekend with The Argus. Made me late for my football match, sending me around an extra 3 km’s, whilst they let another mate of theirs into McDonalds road staright after us! Hell NO, H2O!!!

I completely agree, why waste time and effort on raising the legal age for alchohol ? Why not rather bring consider bringing back the death penalty and killing all the fucking rapists and murderers.Typical south-africa shit , all the realy bad shit is ignored while everyone else is being fucked in the ass with shit like this and fuckin toll roads and tax etc etc … fuck South-Africa.

  5. Jacques March 16, 2011 at 10:23 pm #

If South Africa wants to be like other countries they can. I mean it is plainly obvious that 1st world countries have gotten some things right. But if we want to copy the USA we had better be prepared to go all the way and allow 16 year old kids to drive around unsupervised.

    • Mr. Cape Town March 17, 2011 at 12:44 am #

I would personally prefer 18 year old drinkers than 16 year old drivers thanks very much. The scary thing is most 15/16 year old’s these days are already doing chemical drugs, so I guess it is a pointless initiative?

  6. Nina March 24, 2011 at 8:11 am #

NO way! Hahaha what about the 18-21 year olds working in a bar or club?? The ANC is all about job creation? But what the fuck???? I’ve neen drinking long before I was 18 anyway!! I’m not gonna stop now!! I like the prostesting by getting shitfaced idea! Eitherway I’m gonna stock up on booze!!!! LONG LIVE THE PARTY!!!!!

    • Mr. Cape Town March 24, 2011 at 1:24 pm #

HAHA Nina please follow my Mr Cape Town page on Facebook! We could use more of your spicy comments 😉
Looks like all those poor students would have to change their profession!!! ANC say they are about job creation, big difference! Why then are there so many people still unemployed decades down the line?

I agree LONG LIVE THE PARTY!!!

  7. John March 24, 2011 at 6:46 pm #

    This is a GREAT idea!

The driving age should be raised to 21 too and people should hold a learners for at least two years, do tests in wet and dry and day and night. The way people drive on South African roads is absolutely shameful!

This is a pathetic law. I’m turning 18 in a month and I’ve been waiting 3yrs to be able to walk into a club without the fear of getting bounced! Screw whoever thinks this is an appropriate law, this law just stops us from purchasing.. But obviously we are going to make a plan! So now it comes down to either sitting back another 3yrs or fighting for what we believe in, not alcohol but our RIGHT TO PARTY!!!

    • Mr. Cape Town May 15, 2011 at 10:31 pm #

HAHA I am with you on that one Dee 😉 Pity I was dpping since the tender age of 13 so it doesn’t really matter if they change it or not. We used to utilise places like Mandela Park as our distribution channel 😉

  9. Celia July 8, 2011 at 11:43 am #

    this law is completely redicilous!!
i am 20 and have been drinking for 3 years now and this is what ive seen:
the only places where the drinking age prohibits underage kids from drinking is clubs, bars and bottle stores. At home (and espessialy at house parties) underage kids drink ALL THE TIME!
so essensially the government will only force more people to drink in the privacy of homes etc. where they can freely obtain alcohol and where there is less controll.
I get why they want to make this change (teen preganacy, DUI, violence, drug abuse) but this law will only INCREASE these things, because, like i said, underage drinking in uncontrolled environments will increase.
At clubs etc you cannot have sex and get pregnant, experiment with drugs, get so drunk you pass out on the floor etc.
At house parties or ‘kuiers’ in parks kids can freely do all these things without adults or bounjsers to interfere??
i know for a FACT i will jol at home if i cant gou clubbing anymore. so essentially i will be moving my alcohol consumption out from a controlled environment to more obscure places where there is no one to see if i get pregnant or use drugs – nice one Mr President

well, I understand the notion. I’m turning 18 in 2 months, and would be bummed if I couldn’t go out for a beer. The problem is that people think that drinking is getting drunk. What about having a glass of wine with supper, a beer with rugby/soccer or a hunters because its fucking hot outside? The people should learn to be responsable drinkers and everyone should learn one lesson: DONT DRINK AND DRIVE. The good thing is that this is South Africa and having to do something like adding a law is just too much admim. anyway, just my 2 cents.

ps. all the things one can do when one is 18 and then raising the drinking age, well, thats just pure silly.

  11. Anonymous February 7, 2012 at 8:47 am #

South Africa is just getting more fucked up! Honestly i started drinking when i was still small my father raised me with alcohol to just shut up crying now who the hell of the ANC is going to get me stop drinking? Enjoying Alcohol is my Hobby and I LOVE MY HOBBY! Who on earth wouldnt love his Hobby? hehehe!

  12. Jacques March 19, 2013 at 8:55 am #

The drunkest I ever got, regularly was before I even turned 18… Any law gets tested in its application, if the no u18 law is not properly policed now, how will they cope with the proposed no u21 law?

What the cANCer doesn’t seem to realise is that writing something down on paper doesn’t make it happen…

You have to WORK at it!

    ReWORK it!

    Fine tune it!

This goes for anything on earth. Nothing comes from sitting around & doing nothing. Unless the aim of the cANCer is to eradicate themselves through diabetes & heart disease!

They want to bring the drinking age up to 21 to prevent things such as crimes and motor vehicle accidents. Businesses will lose massive incomes from restaurants to the people that are employed by night clubs. A large quantity of these clubs are aimed at the ages of 18-21 and passing this law will have devastating consequences. There’s such a big ‘hoo-ha’ about alcohol and all the problems alcohol causes, 47% of all road deaths are influenced by drunken driving, now the government will not only have to make sure these kids aren’t drinking underage and deal with the DD because that aint stopping. what ever happened to the legalization or marijuana? the cops would have so much free resources from capital to prison space. keep the drinking age at 18, legalize cannabis and lets go get the hard drugs such as cocaine, heroine, tik (that’s just three yo). Lets use the prison space that’s being used to hold people who grow and sell a natural plant to hold rapists and murderes, there are greater problems in our beautiful country. Peace.

It is going to be passed during 2014. It is a good law and will save many lives.

Consider that more than 73% of alcohol related traffic deaths are due to drunk piss gesiggies between 19 and 21.

  15. Shaun September 6, 2014 at 1:54 am #

I agree with john totally too many 18-20 year olds are messing up the clubs getting drunk causing fights throwing up all over just because they think 18 means they can handle the alcohol

  16. Maddy June 29, 2015 at 4:06 pm #

I agree, get the irresponsible kids out of pubs and clubs they have no business going there. It makes me sick to see the youngsters so wasted and tomorow they want to blame others for what happened to them in their drunken stage. I have NO sympathy with them.
