Spur’s New R19.95 Breakfast Special Review

It would have been me that did not get a breakfast, because our waitress "Sharon Stoned" forgot to put one of the orders through. It was okay though, because she just said it would be there soon and laughed... #brandfail

The service was below poor!

As you know I am a fiend for any kind of special or promotion and an English breakfast is none other than the best cure for a habitual Saturday morning hanger. Spur is running a breakfast special on their Unreal Breakfast (previously the Drifter), which offers you 2 eggs, 2 pieces of toast, 2 rashes of bacon, fried tomato and a portion of chips. Not at all bad for just R19.95!!! One thing they didn’t care to mention though, was the shocking service!

I went down to my local (Arthurs Seat Spur, Sea Point) with a couple of mates to check it out. We got there a tad late as the special ends at 11am, but we still got the exact same offering for R26.95 so we were not too bothered. My mate who actually won a poker tournament the night before was getting my bill so i didn’t really care either way 😉

If it was warm and all it would have been amazing! FOMO

It would have been me that did not get a breakfast, because our waitress “Sharon Stoned” forgot to put one of the orders through. It was okay though, because she just said it would be there soon and laughed? So as my mates began eating they realised 2 of the plates of food were actually freezing cold. One of them sent theirs back, which I might add came back a second time great because the manager went and did it pretty much himself!

My food then came with no toast, which I waited another 5 minutes for and by then was so irritated just ate the cold thing anyway. One thing I must say is that the chips were also extremely old, although I do thank the manager for not charging us, as it was a total for lack of a better word, fu*k up!

The ribs at Spur are always a winner! R99 all you can eat on a Tuesday...

So in conclusion, I suggest rather sticking to the night when it comes to visiting the Spur! Preferably being a Monday (2 for 1 burgers) or Tuesday (eat all you can ribs) – The only thing unreal about my “Unreal Breakfast” was the service!!! If you would like to query any of my mates that were with me about the experience please feel free to converse with them via Twitter; @Calvido21 | Leeann_Roberts | @Lancon69 | @StevenBark

That's all I can say about our Spur breakfast experience...Fail!

We are so disappointed to read of your “fail” breakfast experience! Your points above are going to be discussed with the management team which will prevent it from happening again. Slow/bad service is definitely not acceptable!!

Thank you for getting back to me. I really do love the Spur brand and it reassures me a bit more that you do care about your customers. Not only because your Twitter name is @SpurCares, but you actually did reply! See you soon for a rib or burger special. If you would like me to do some mystery shopping for you guys that would be great too 😉

I’ve also had terrible service at Arthurs Road Spur. Shocking service, and they told us we can’t move inside when we were freezing our assess off outside and there were like 10 open tables?? The table next to us was moaning that they weren’t going to pay as well!

Thanks Evan, as a loyal Spur and Sea Point boy does this not infuriate you? I have grown up going there and it seems to just be getting worse?

I personally dealt with this complaint myself & apologise again for the bad experience this gentlemen & friends had in my store. We were definately slack & I also apologise to the Spur brand. I assure u alot of effort has been put into this store & there is still work to be done. Regards Adrian

Why does work need to be done? Spur has always been great and I got another complaint this morning from a reader who got asked “Are you jus” when he wanted to swop his tomato for bacon…You guys really need to get jacked up!!!

Wow Mr Cape Town quite a scathing report you wrote. Whenever I have been to the Spur I have had a really good experience. Pity you had such a bad one.

I too get frustrated going to restaurants when the service and food is bad. However one thing about the service industry is that things go wrong , people make mistakes. Imagine having to deal and please 100’s if not 1000’s of people everyday?

To put down a brand because of one bad experience is a little unfair. To call a waitress stoned could cost her a job.

Hope that when you write future reports about restaurants you consider that restaurants are always going to try and make things better, no restaurant will ever be perfect. The fact that they are answering you and actually showing you that they care, perhaps you should give them some slack.

Hi Lottie. It is not the first time the service has been slow in the morning at Seven Spur Sea Point with their new Unreal Breakfast special. A few of my mates/readers had probs so went to check it out! Thanks for your opinion and i do agree somewhat, although in the past i have tried that contact them approach and nothing ever gets done. The harsh reality is that brands must hire staff that can actually do the job required of them, not muppets. If i had a restaurant (may in future) I 100% expect my staff to do their best and also will take the hits when they don’t.

The rise in social mediums such as Twitter and Facebook do not allow bad service to hide anywhere. That is the truth and until such time that ppl start getting the service the expect/deserve it is going to keep happenin. Whether it is me or the blogger around the corner, the truth will come out! Oh and the stoned joke is inverted commas to highlight the play on words of the famous achtor. She probably was not stoned but the service was so slow, that we for some reason called her that at the table. It is a joke and a play on words mate. Sorry if you didn’t catch it!

Never the less I appreciate your insight and I always willing to take critisism, unlike many other brands in this country!

  6. Lottie May 9, 2011 at 12:26 pm #

Yip totally got the play on words but still think one should be careful with those types of comments. You speak about exposing truth , but it is your subjective truth not everyone elses’.

I think you have the right and freedom of speech to say what you feel but I have noticed that you placed how you felt on your persoanl open FB profile, on spurs fan page and on this blog. IDo you not think this is taking it a bit far? Especially since the manger appears to be jumping leaps and bounds to make you happy?

    One think making

I wish you all the best of luck in opening a restaurant one day as I think you will see how difficult it is.

    • Mr. Cape Town May 9, 2011 at 2:12 pm #

I have worked in a restaurant for 3 years and got all that came my way when i did not meet the expectations of the clients. It is a personal blog and therefore it is my opinion, my humour and my time and effort. I am sure you know Facebook Fan Pages, Blogs, Twitter and sharing is how I get my words out to my readers. Some only have Facebook, while others only have Twitter, thus creating the need for me to share it across all mediums! I am still quite new to the world, and, hopefully with time my writing style will get better and maybe take the more professional side, rather than personal. For now it is a personal blog and I do not want to lose the personal touch, like other big Cape Town blogs have over the past by becoming bigger than some of the brands they review!

I appreciate your input, although I would like to know which facts you would like me to get straight? Other than the play on words about “Sharon Stoned” which seemed to anger you? The facts here were that they forgot to make my food, laughed about it when i complained, the food was cold, the toast was half cooked, there was no cuttlery and and overall the experience was shocking. If it was not for Adrian phoning me personally to apologise from the Spur brand and re-assure me that something is being done about it, I would probably still be sharing the article via these mediums. This is what the aim of my blog is, improve service and experiences like this for all Capetonians. I must be honest it has woked many times and I will continue to share my tales with my readers, until such time as there is no such thing as bad service…

Appologies I sent the above comment before had finished and therefore had some typos but think you have gotten the just of what I am saying and think when being so extrovert with opinions that will impact many people involved, one should get all the facts before being so critical.

Nice one Mr CT. If we don’t make a noise about bad service nothing will get done to correct the situation, people will stop visiting spur, spur will close down and “sharon stoned” will be out of a job anyway 🙂 It’s tough love

    • Mr. Cape Town May 12, 2011 at 6:23 pm #

HAHA awe Jen. Nice to know not EVERYONE is a hater. Hope you enjoying Jozi!
