Saigon – Vietnamese Restaurant

I went to Saigon in Kloof Street for my birthday dinner last night and it was the fourth time I have been to the place. They serve traditional Vietnamese dishes (with a Japanese influence), as well as some amazing sushi. I had the butternut soup as a starter, whilst my brother had the sticky lamp dumplings and the parents shared some salmon/tuna roses (which are massive). All the starters were great and came out fairly quickly, but if you are a big sushi fan just double check how backed up their sushi bar is. The waiter mentioned to us that if there are more than 5 or 6 orders in the sushi bar pipeline, it may take 30 to 45 minutes. Luckily we were first in the queue so it was pretty quick.

The salmon roses were massive and it is not often you find tun roses on a menu in Cape Town. The tuna was some of the freshest we have ever had. 10/10 for those!!!

We got a bottle of Warwick wine with the meal and for R200 I must say it was OK, not the best though… The mains are not too badly priced, unless you are going for something extra exotic like duck, kingklip or prawns… Seeing as though it was a birthday dinner we went pretty wild and got the following mains; angry duck, duck breast in orange sauce, caramelized kingklip pot and crumbed kingklip in a sweet sauce. They were all over R100 but absolutely fucking amazing I might add. A side of noodles and rice for 4 of us did the trick for the side portions and only order more if you really need it. Two really is sufficient if you are doing starters too!

The mains really were phenomenal and I highly recommend rice as a side with the angry duck, with noodles as a side for the caramelized kingklip pot. If you don’t want to breach the R100 mark for a main there are loads of curry’s, pork and chicken dishes for around R79! Some other very popular dishes include the sweet & sour chicken and the pork ribs in honey sauce…

The service was very good and the waiter was always around to be seen if we needed another drink or some extra additions like ice for the wine. It does tent to get quite busy so I can see how they may spin out a bit if the place is packed to the rafters. On to dessert and the pick of the bunch there had to be the deep fried ice cream, deep fried banana with ice cream, chocolate fondant/volcano or the Dom Pedro! If you do go for the fondant, it takes a bit longer than the rest as they have to bake it until the chocolate interior is ready to ooze out into your bek 😉

T

The chocolate fondant/volcano is like this little cake that oozes out hot, melted chocolate and when you mix it with some ice cream it really is a treat on the lips, not so much the hips though, it is rich as Hell!

It is situated across the road from Asoka Bar and Scooter’s pizza on Kloof Street. If you want to take a squeeza to an impressive place, this is definitely on that list. Just make sure you take the card to swipe if she has an expensive pallet… You can get VERY carried away at this place!!! All in all a great night out and I will definitely be going back again!
