We have all grown up drinking specific fizzy drinks, some brands having more of a nostalgic, warm personal attachment to them than others. This for me, was Appletiser… Until they recently changed their packaging, adding value to their products (apparently) with their new plastic 350ml & 1.25L offerings! But that all depends what you see as value? Funny how they forgot to mention that they had changed the recipe of this memorable, iconic South African brand…
“Appletiser and Grapetiser are iconic South African products, sold for decades in cans and marketed as 100 percent fruit juice with no added sugar, preservatives or colourants. In other words, a healthier alternative to traditional fizzy drinks. But the ’Tisers are also far more expensive than the other fizzies, and with packaging making up a sizeable chunk of production costs, one way of slashing the price was to put the product in cheaper plastic (PET) bottles.” – IOL
The peeps at Appletiser forgot to mention one crucial bit of information though. But I am sure you Apple/Grape/Pear Tizer loyalists wont care that the new product offerings are no longer preservative free!!! The labelling says ‘new value pack’ very clearly, although you have to read the finer print to find out about the ingredient change… So just like Lucozade, Appletiser have gone and ruined yet another one of my firm favourite’s in the beverage category. Bleak times!
No ! I thought those plastic bottles were a joke.
Yip, it is a sad reality… I absolutely hate beverage’s in PET, plastic bottles!
I think it’s a great, bold, affordable move from Appletiser!!
Yeah I see where you coming from, but the reason I drank the product is because of no added sugar or preservatives…Don’t REALLY mind about the PET packaging, just that I prefer glass. Everything tastes better out of glass.
Dear Mr Cape Town and twitter respondents. Appletiser will continue to be available unpreserved in glass and cans. The plastic packs are an additional option for consumers who prefer the convenience and affordability of plastic. The new 1.25 l week-end addition offers 66% more Appletiser than the 750 ml glass bottle at a lower price, a significant saving for you in tough economic times. All Appletiser variant labelling conforms to legislative requirements. Yours faithfully. Neil Hobkirk from Appletiser.
Thanks Neil, tasted it for the first time a few weeks ago not the same. But I see why you guys did it…Value
First Salt & Vinegar chips get the cut! Now this… It’s clown city out in SA, really.
Apparently they have not changed the recipe in cans or glass. But they basically selling a totally different product under the same brand name which has created a massive following and group of loyalists in SA. Fine it is cheaper, bigger and perfect for on-the-go but the fact remains it tastes completely different!
i hate plastic!!!! So now I have ended my relationship with Appletiser. And with Lucozade. And with Black Cat Peanut Butter. Marmite next? Or has it too gone for value in money instead of the value of health. I despair.
