Ocean Basket – The Bread Bin

I just got home from a great meal at Ocean Basket, V&A Waterfront. I had the famous platter for one, a Black Label and a Coca Cola. The problem was the initial contact…with the bread they brought as an appetizer. It was one slice of Albany brown, literally torn into 4 pieces, dented and had an extremely negative visual appeal!

The Bread Bin

This is something restaurant owners should look into as the first impression is vital in any business/industry or even picking up a a squeeza (chick) in  bar. I mean when I go to Primi and they bring me this great, warm, homemade bread with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and butter I actually feel like I could just eat that as a main meal and not even worry about ordering from the menu! Talking about garlic we got the usual side plate of chilli/tar tar, however the only thing we asked for was garlic and that didn’t seem to come along in the package?

The best looking piece of brood in the basket...shocker!

Although my mate Alon Bitton, otherwise known as the Kibbutz Trader, wanted to complain I kindly asked him to refrain until we were done eating, as I have worked in restaurants myself and personally know what goes on back there where there are no customers eyes to bear witness!

The one thing about Ocean Basket is the food comes out in lightning quick time and is always just as it seems on the menu’s pictures. The white sauce on the mussels ends my life and would do anything for that recipe.

The platter for one was great...

Overall a good experience, I’m so full now I’m even contemplating not going out tonight. Although that might change once this food has settled a bit 😉

I must say I am not surprised to read this as I have had many problems with that specific Ocean Basket before! My girlfriend and I are real seafood fanatics and O.B. is surely one of the best seafood restaurants in my opinion. However, we seem to have a recurring problem with both the service and the food at the O.B. Waterfront. We never get what we asked for and the waiting staff always seem reluctant to listen to any complaints. We constantly have to wait at least half an hour for a bill to arrive. Furthermore, the condition of the balcony is absolutely appauling! I’m confident that no customers wish to eat with food and other dirt laying around their eating area!! I can not comprehend how this is missed by the managing staff. This is a problem that we unfortunately ONLY experience at this specific Ocean Basket, Waterfront, and I think it would be wise to make a formal complaint as these circumstances could end up damaging the O.B. brand. I love the food, its always up to standard and will continue eating at Ocean Basket, just not at the V&A Waterfront.

100% agree man! Thanks for the comment, I am a huge fan and ambassador for the OB brand and love their value for money they provide! But the V&A branch doesn’t do the brand any justice, more harm actually! Glad you took your time to write this, thank you!

I was eating at ocean basket o.r tanbo international it was rather late when my plane landed. I asked for a platter for one, and waited 45 min. When i finally received my meal, the fish and prawns were still frozen. When i asked for the manager in charge they said his not available and gave me a number. When i called that number it was on voicemail and there where only foreigners on duty. Ever since i dont eat at or tambo international ocean basket when i go to jhb any more. They spoil good food and implement poor service. Great topic (Adels)
