I went to my first ever outdoor party for my birthday in 2003, over New Years. I must admit the first few moments were a bit weird as I was testing new waters, but it did not take long for me to fit right in amongst the cookers π This weekend I am working the bar at the Labyrinth outdoor, Equinox. I worked the bar for the first time at Earthdance and I have no regrets whatsoever! So it seems the days of getting motherless on Black & White whisky and Simonsig papsak are coming to an end, as I have to be semi conscious to be able to count money and work effectively π
Labyrinth was a psy brand that got introduced to the club scene many years ago through trance nights at 02 bar, Opium. I was a big fan and went every week, after briefly visiting the Bowling Club in Camps Bay for some cheap brandy shots and R4 glasses of wine. The Labyrinth brand now looks to move into the outdoor scene and are hosting a cracker of a party this weekend, in the form of Equinox! Dean Fuel will be playing the closing set on Sunday and it seems the Labyrinth Crew have put together a lineup with a bit of a new approach to outdoor parties. They have cleverly combined the most talented electronic and psy artists, with a host of big local names such as Broken Toy, Pascal & Pearce and Headroom!
I believe this could be a brilliant tactic to attract not only the psy crowd, but also the more commercial, Assembly crowd. It is no secret that trance music and outdoor parties have grown substantially over the past 5 years and I think Labyrinth have done well to get on the band wagon at the right time. Music determines where people party and if Equinox in collaboration with Labyrinth isΒ providing music for both of these crowds, they might just reap the rewards of listening to what consumers want and watching local music trends.
I hope Dean and the crew all the best for the weekend and wish him all the best with regard to the smooth running of the event. Come visit me at the bar between 3pm Sat – 3am Sun… Oh and if you can afford to buy me a Jagermeister I won’t say no π
have been following your blog and will absolutely continue to do so. Content is great!
great to hear. thanks for the support
i adore this site.
Brilliant blog about Equinox. I read it twice. Really did kickstart a few of the other brands to take on more electronic acts which appeal more diverse crowds. Not only the die hard stompers like you and your crew!
thanks for the insight and I couldn’t agree more. Really loved that party, music wasn’t my main factor, but the setup, the vibe and the smoothness of how everything ran was terrific. Big up to Dean and Hype Media!
